IMO, with higher horsepower cars, shorter gears=bad/more traction problems/loss of boost. For a drift car/autocross/lower hp car I can see this as useful though. Remember everytime you shift you lose boost. An extra gear is just another opportunity for the engine to lose boost when making a street/strip pull. 6-speeds are more for NA's, supercharged, and bragging rights(being different?)... Maybe a small "instaspool" turbo setup.
This is not for all 6 speeds though. Some 6 speeds offer more top end than a 5 speed would, this, IMO, justifies the extra gear. But this is not the case for the 350z 6 speed as the last gear is actually SHORTER than the 5 speed meaning 5th gear in the 300zx has a higher top end/top speed than the 6th gear in the 350z manual.
